Some useful tips for pre-walkers
- Make sure you get shoes with soft soles and flexible uppers.
- Pram shoes are for foot covering, warmth and protection
- Ensure their socks aren't too tight § Keep bed covers loose
- Allow the feet to exercise without constraint
- Cut the toe nails straight across
First shoes
- Firm soles should not be fitted until the child is walking unaided across a room.
- Check that socks are not too big or too small.
- Be aware that sizes vary between different manufacturers and European, UK and US fittings.
- Both feet should be measured for
- length and width, as the larger foot indicates that size required.
- In the first year, a child's foot can grow, on average, half a size every six to eight weeks.
What to look for in the first shoes
- Straight last.
- Some form of adjustment.
- Light anti-slip soles which flex under the ball of the foot.
- No hard seams or rough edges which can rub or chafe soft skin.
- Firm supportive heel.
How to check for a good fit
- Neat fitting heel.
- The upper line of shoes is clear of ankle bone.
- The adjustment is not causing any restriction.Ensure the shoe flexes under the ball of the foot.
- Ensure the child is not tripping while walking.
- The shoe slips on easily.
- Test for width - Slide thumb across the top of the shoe to ensure ample room.
There is no concern if your child:
- Is not walking by 20 months.
- Has bow legs from birth to two years.
- Developed knocked knees from age two to six years.
- Has no visible arch for the first 2-3 years.
