The Right Shoes

Pre-walkers

Some useful tips for pre-walkers
  • Make sure you get shoes with soft soles and flexible uppers.
  • Pram shoes are for foot covering, warmth and protection
  • Ensure their socks aren't too tight § Keep bed covers loose
  • Allow the feet to exercise without constraint
  • Cut the toe nails straight across

First shoes

  • Firm soles should not be fitted until the child is walking unaided across a room.
  • Check that socks are not too big or too small.
  • Be aware that sizes vary between different manufacturers and European, UK and US fittings.
  • Both feet should be measured for
  • length and width, as the larger foot indicates that size required.
  • In the first year, a child's foot can grow, on average, half a size every six to eight weeks.

What to look for in the first shoes

  • Straight last.
  • Some form of adjustment.
  • Light anti-slip soles which flex under the ball of the foot.
  • No hard seams or rough edges which can rub or chafe soft skin.
  • Firm supportive heel.

How to check for a good fit

  • Neat fitting heel.
  • The upper line of shoes is clear of ankle bone.
  • The adjustment is not causing any restriction.Ensure the shoe flexes under the ball of the foot.
  • Ensure the child is not tripping while walking.
  • The shoe slips on easily.
  • Test for width - Slide thumb across the top of the shoe to ensure ample room.

There is no concern if your child:

  • Is not walking by 20 months.
  • Has bow legs from birth to two years.
  • Developed knocked knees from age two to six years.
  • Has no visible arch for the first 2-3 years.
